In November 2001, the Master Fish Merchants' Association of Australia entered into an Eco-Efficiency Agreement with Environment Australia (the Commonwealth Department of the Environment and Heritage. This agreement forms an integral part of the Associations long-term commitment to deliver an economically and environmentally sustainable industry.

The Eco-Efficiency Agreement is a voluntary, three-year partnership between the MFMA and the Commonwealth Government in order to assist the wholesale and retail sector to go beyond the status quo and seek practical, effective ways to become more efficient, save money and reduce environmental impacts.

As a signatory to the Agreement, the Commonwealth Government has agreed to provide financial support to assist with the implementation of the Agreement, to promote and publicise the Agreement and the resultant eco-efficiency achievements, and to provide advice on relevant policy and other matters.

Activities to be carried out by the MFMA under this agreement include undertaking an annual survey of the sector which will form the basis of a Public Environment Report, development of an industry specific Environmental Management System and a handbook of case studies based on environmental audits of a select number of businesses.

While the activities under this agreement will be primarily undertaken within NSW, all results and initiatives will be openly available and promoted throughout Australia.
